Preparation

Students will analyse data collected from the marine debris survey they completed in the Lesson: Bag it!

Students will require access to the Student Worksheet they completed during their marine debris survey.

Steps

  1. Summarise the data collected on your chosen Student Worksheet during the marine debris survey completed in the Lesson: Bag It! – using tables or graphs.
  2. What is the total number of marine debris items and weight? How many items per category?
  3. Using Student Worksheet: Un-fantastic five, formulate a list of the top five most collected items or heaviest items.
  4. Describe the item and possible origin of the material such as the possible user group or industry and how the marine debris ended up on the beach.
  5. Taking into account evidence and data from the survey, formulate some practical and realistic actions that could reduce the amount of marine debris on the beach.
  6. Choose one action and where possible implement the action. Actions could include:
    • Organise a beach or town cleanup day and get the community involved.
    • Write a letter or article to the local newspaper communicating your findings and raising awareness about marine debris.
    • Create posters or other artwork (even made from the marine debris collected!) that can be used to communicate positive actions and values. Arrange a display of these materials at the local supermarket, council offices or school office.
    • Request additional bins or dog poo disposal bags at the site.
    • Conduct a whole school marine debris awareness day.
  7. Compile results of the marine debris survey and details of the action plan in a student report.
