Duration

30 - 40 minutes

Students will design their own rock pool habitat.

Preparation

This activity may be a simple or as detailed as you like it to be. Students could design their rock pool simply with pencils and a piece of paper. Alternatively, you may choose to provide them with shells, sand, cellophane, tissue paper, wax crayons and paint their finished pieces with edicol dye.

Steps

  1. Engage students in a discussion about the creatures that lived in the rock pool in Sharing a Shell.  Have students visited rock pools at the beach before? What other creatures have they seen?  How do the creatures survive when the tide goes out and there is little or no water in the rock pool? How do they hide from predators?
  2. Provide students with your chosen materials and ask them to create their rock pool thinking about the creatures that live in there and how they survive.
