Taking Action Now to Ensure Demersal Scalefish for the Future

The West Coast Bioregion is home to a variety of fish species that live on or near the bottom of the ocean. These fish are termed ‘demersal’ species and include dhufish, pink snapper, baldchin groper, breaksea cod, blue morwong (queen snapper) and red snapper. The sustainability of these key demersal species has been a growing concern and there have been considerable efforts to address pressures on fish stocks. It is now evident that new management arrangements are needed to ensure iconic species such as dhufish and pink snapper are available for future generations, Western Fisheries article by M. van Zeller Nov 2007, pg. 13-17
