Until 10 or 15 years ago, deepwater species in Western Australia have escped the attention of recreational fishers. However, anglers armed with large boats and hi-tech fishing gear are pursuing several long-lived species like hapuku and bass groper. This article joins a joint Department of Fisheries, CSIRO and University of Western Australia research expedition to the edge of the continental shelf.
